The DHEC board has denied a developer's application to drive 30' deep metal pilings into the narrow section of the Spit. This is part of the larger proposed project on Captain Sam's Spit that SCELP is fighting. At a hearing on December 10th 2009 the DHEC board reversed their staff decision, and denied the request for the permit by the developer.
The DHEC Board has denied KDP (the developer) a permit to construct a metal sheet pile wall on the narrow portion of Captain Sam's Spit. At a Board review on Dec 10th, 2009 in Columbia, the Board reversed their staff decision. The review was the result of requests by Friends of the Kiawah River and SCELP. At the hearing, the proposal was supported by DHEC, Leonard Long (KDP) and their attorney Trenholm Walker. Congratulations to the team of Amy Armstrong (SCELP), Nancy Vinson (CCL) and Sidi Limehouse (FKR), who together were so convincing that the Board stopped proceedings and went into private session. When the hearing reconvened, there was a unanimous vote to deny the application.
