Summary

The South Carolina Environmental Law Project (SCELP) is now accepting applications for a Communications Manager. SCELP was founded in 1987 to meet the critical need for specialized non-profit legal services for environmental protection in South Carolina.

As a non-profit public interest environmental law firm, we use our legal expertise to protect land, water and communities across South Carolina and to achieve a vision where our land, water and communities are protected and SC laws and policies prioritize life sustaining natural systems.

SCELP has a main office in Georgetown and satellite offices in Columbia, Greenville and Mt. Pleasant.

 

Description

SCELP is seeking a capable Communications Manager to help shape and broadcast our story in ways that promote our work, reputation, and mission. The position will help set the strategy for all communications and public relations messaging and will be responsible for creating, publishing and promoting marketing, editorial, and fundraising content/campaigns across traditional and digital channels, including SCELP website, social media, email, video, printed newsletters and materials, and media relations.

The Communications Manager will drive and execute SCELP’s communications and marketing planning. The position will be responsible for content development and public relations strategy, including media relations, community outreach, event planning, and targeted advertising.

Candidates must understand how to best use different communications platforms. Experience in environmental issues, nonprofit/advocacy communications, project management, creative content, and graphic design skills are a plus.

The position will report to the Deputy Director, will manage the Communications Team (including the Communications Associate) and will work closely with all staff across different offices.

The goals and key responsibilities of this position include the following:

 

General and Project Management (30%)

  • Planning: collaborate with the leadership team in the development of annual and strategic plans, manage and report on Communications and Marketing plan and budget, develop and maintain communications calendar(s) and internal protocols
  • Copywriting and story-telling: design, curate and publish monthly emails and bi-annual printed newsletters to report on SCELP impact and current news
  • Brand management: refine and promote SCELP’s voice, image, reputation and guidelines, manage corporate materials (letterhead, business cards, etc.)

 Digital Marketing (30%)

  • Website management: maintain scelp.org and work with other team members and consultants to develop and update content, improve traffic, SEO, platform efficiency and user engagement
  • Social media management: help develop and execute social media strategy and initiatives, direct and oversee the Communications Associate’s use of social media platforms to achieve Communications & Marketing goals
  • Digital fundraising: in coordination with the development team, develop and execute campaigns and initiatives to increase online donations, cultivate donor relationships, and diversify SCELP’s supporter base

 Media Relations (20%)

  • Grow and manage media relations and requests, cultivating and maintaining relationships with regional and national media
  • Develop and maintain press kit materials, including press releases, pitch letters, case studies, feature articles, and trend stories
  • Facilitate staff attorneys and client engagement, developing and managing special-issue and/or emergency communications plans

Community Relations (10%)

  • Oversee and direct targeted strategies for event marketing, including SCELP’s annual fundraiser
  • Assist with volunteer management and coordination, as needed

Strategic Insights, Monitoring and Evaluation (10%)

  • Conduct research on relevant topics and market trends to ensure SCELP communications efforts remain relevant for target audiences
  • Manage Board and Committee reporting, including gathering data, designing charts and creating report documents with the assistance of Communications Associate
  • Oversee Communications Associate evaluation and metrics work

 

Qualifications & Experience

The Communications Manager is expected to be current and knowledgeable about best practices in traditional, digital and other media with a willingness to continue learning as the industry evolves, and to have a sound knowledge of the structure and content of the English language. Specific requirements for this position include:

  • Proven experience as public relations/communications manager or similar position (5 years or more preferred)
  • Experience in project management and execution of PR and advertising campaigns
  • Familiarity with all major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Capacity for absorbing and synthetizing complex program information and translating it into a compelling story for new and existing supporters
  • Demonstrated commitment to SCELP’s mission and environmental protection values
  • Must be flexible, proactive, very well organized, and able to prioritize and work efficiently under strict deadlines
  • Working knowledge of CRM/email messaging systems, Google Workspace and MS Office; photo and video-editing software (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign); familiarity with Webflow a plus
  • BS/BA in marketing, communications, journalism, environmental studies or other relevant field
