A decade after neighbors push, DHEC presents clean up plan for toxic site in Southernside

There may finally be some solutions for an abandoned site in Greenville that’s long been a concern for neighbors. Thursday, Southernside residents packed into Mountain View Baptist Church to hear DHEC’s plans to clean up the site on Bramlett Road.

Residents and neighborhood leaders fear the site has impacted the neighborhood’s health and quality of life for decades.

“That affected this community in a big way. Whether the then residents understood it or realized it or not,” said Rev. Stacey Mills about the site.

A full decade has now passed since neighbors in the historically Black Southernside community were first made aware of what lurks under the soil of this abandoned site.
