BEAUFORT — As expected, Councilmember Logan Cunningham brought forward a motion to rescind a vote council made in September denying a long-debated proposal to build a golf resort and gated community on St. Helena Island Island — which has a cultural protection overlay in place to protect against such developments.

Council convened a public hearing on the proposed Pine Island agreement on Sept. 22. After dozens of people spoke on the hotly contested matter, the vote didn’t come until the early hours of the following day. Ultimately, council resoundingly rejected the proposal 10-1.
