Commentary: How data center secrecy is shaping South Carolina

On Thursday night, I appeared before McCormick County Council and urged it to slow down.

The agenda included a rezoning request that would open the door for a 1,000-megawatt data center complex — one of the largest ever proposed in South Carolina — in the heart of one of our state's most rural counties. I asked the council to adopt a moratorium, giving itself and its community time to understand what was at stake. Instead, council members advanced the rezoning and rejected the moratorium, both in a 3-2 vote.
