Contaminated site in Greenville, South Carolina neighborhood moves closer to DHEC cleanup

A meeting, put on by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, was held Thursday night at Mountain View Baptist Church about potential cleanup efforts for a contaminated site that sits in a Greenville neighborhood.

The church has been around for more than 100 years and sits in Greenville's Southernside/Newton neighborhood, which is a historically Black area that has been contaminated for more than half of that time.

The contamination happened over the years after two companies polluted the Reedy River and illegally dumped more than 100,000 thousand tons of garbage there, officials said.

Public interest reignited a few years ago to get state health officials involved with a push for cleanup.
