AIKEN — The South Carolina Environmental Law Project, representing the organizations SRS Watch, Nuclear Watch New Mexico and an Aiken County resident, has sent a letter to U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Christopher Wright saying that DOE and the National Nuclear Security Administration “are radically changing course” in the Surplus Plutonium Disposition Program “without preparing a necessary supplemental programmatic environmental impact statement.”
The claim is similar to one the groups filed regarding DOE’s plan to produce plutonium pits — a core component of nuclear weapons — at both the Savannah River Site and at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
