Tempers flare as council argues over presence of Pine Island developer in executive session

BEAUFORT — Just days after being accused of violating South Carolina’s Freedom of Information Act, Beaufort County officials seemed prepared to repeat the practice that first drew the accusation. This time, several council members pushed back.

The agenda for the Sept. 28 Beaufort County Council executive session included an item in which the Council would receive legal advice related to a lawsuit filed in April 2026 by Pine Island Property Holdings LLC and Pine Island GC LLC. The two corporations are behind a yearslong effort to develop a golf resort on the St. Helena Island property often referred to as Pine Island.
