WestEdge project to fill Gadsden Creek in Charleston is challenged in court

Activists are challenging state permits awarded to the developers of WestEdge, a planned complex of apartments and businesses that includes filling in a creek on the West Side of the Charleston peninsula.

The move is only the latest salvo in the fight over Gadsden Creek, a tidal stream that winds between the already-built parts of WestEdge and the Gadsden Green homes, a public housing complex.

The challenge was filed Oct. 1 with the South Carolina’s Administrative Law Court, where judges hear arguments against the decisions of state regulators. At issue are two permits related to the filling of the creek, which developers say is necessary both for their project and related drainage work to relieve longstanding flooding in the area.
