Greg VanDerwerker received an undergraduate degree in 1973 from the University of Vermont, and a M.D. degree from Emory University School of Medicine in 1977. After completion of specialty training in pathology at University Hospitals of Cleveland / Case Western Reserve University and N.C. Baptist Hospital / Wake Forest University School of Medicine he was a staff pathologist at Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood, S.C.

Upon retirement Greg and his wife moved to Kiawah Island where he enjoys volunteering with conservation organizations, kayaking, traveling, and baking; an interest which led him to return to school and earn an Associate Degree in Baking and Pastry from Trident Community College.
